Kettering Science Program

The Charles F. Kettering Honors Science Camp is a week-long camp for seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students who demonstrate an interest and aptitude in science. The camp is held in late spring / early summer each year. The program is held at Ashland University's Kettering Science Center each summer. The Charles F. Kettering Honors Science Camps, administered by the Ashland County Community Foundation, are intended to engage seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students in investigating, first-hand, the impact of science on human health. Students in Ashland, Erie, Holmes, Huron, Lorain, Medina, Richland, and Wayne counties are eligible to participate. The camps are held each summer at Ashland University and are provided by a grant from The Kettering Fund. A report of study results are disseminated to schools in the eight country district.

This year, thirty students attended the camp to study drugs, tobacco and living systems. Two camps were conducted for seventh, eighth and nine grade students on June 7-10 and June 14-17. Students were selected to participate based on their performances at the Mohican District Science Fair or by teacher recommendation. Both camps were at a capacity of 15 students each week. Dr. Brian K. Mohney and Dr. Rebecca W. Corbin were co-instructors of the camps and Mrs. Trina Mohney catered the lunches. The camps have been offered since 2006.

Each camp focused on basic chemical analysis of biomolecules in complex mixtures using techniques for separating and identifying some of the chemical components in pens, tea leaves, tobacco products, and over-the-counter analgesic tablets. The participants learned about chemical bonding and molecular interactions, principles of separating mixtures of molecules by paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography and gas chromatography, basic toxicology of chemicals, acid-base chemistry.
