What Is a Community Foundation?

First, take the word: "community." It's a group of people having common interests. Then take the word: "foundation" and think about it as a sturdy platform for growth. The two words together - "community foundation" - give you the idea of people providing solid support for the common good.

A community foundation is a tax-exempt charity that enables people like you to establish charitable funds. Your fund will be pooled with other funds and managed professionally, allowing your assets to grow over time. Grants will be awarded from your fund to the local charitable causes you care about.

A community foundation is governed by a volunteer board of leading citizens that works to match the resources of the foundation to the changing needs of the community. This involves leadership that touches many vital areas of the community.

The first community foundation was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914. Presently, there are over seven hundred community foundations throughout the Untied States.
